Dunlops' dream dies
Against all odds, and amid a little controversy, the Whitby Dunlops were unable to keep their Allan Cup dreams alive on Thursday night. more

When is a major penalty a MAJOR PENALTY?

In reality, the first two games of the Allan Cup do not mean anything except when your team is impacted for the real games which begin today.
This tournament is set up in such a way that even by losing both games there is still a chance to go on to compete for the cup. Of the 3 teams in each mini-division, one team gets the bye to the semi-finals which are played Friday night while the other remaining teams play in an elimination quarter-final match tonight.
Dundas Real McCoys won the bye in Division I by virtue of their win over Lloydminster and Shawinigan Extreme won in Division II by defeating both the Bentley Generals and the host team, Brantford Blast.
In the elimination quarter-final round the Dunlops are facing the Brantford Blast with game time set for 7:30 PM. Brantford edged the Bentley Generals by a score of 5-3 in the final round robin tilt last night.
In the Dunnies final round robin game it was necessary for them to win by at least 3 goals in order to be awarded a bye into the semi-finals on Friday night.
The game was played against the team that eliminated the Dunlops in last year’s final for the Allan Cup.
The Dunlops were slow at the start and at one point trailed in shots by a 7-1 margin before getting their ‘skating legs’. Lloydminster scored first on a powerplay but then the Dunnies rallied and got two of their own powerplay goals, one by Justin Cardwell and the other by Jay McAuley. The speed of the game and opportunities by both sides made for an entertaining period and then the nightmare came.
The Whitby Dunlops, in an unprecedented hockey event to the knowledge of at least 5 hockey people with over 40 years experience watching hockey, were accessed three 5 minute major penalties, three game misconducts from the game, two game ejections from tonight’s game, one game ejection for the next Dunlop game after tonight while the Border Kings got a two minute minor on the same stoppage in play with 58 seconds left to play in the 1st period. The incident took place after the Whitby team captain, Peter MacKellar had been cross-checked in front of the net, followed behind the net and mugged along the boards by two Lloydminster players. MacKellar, in an attempt to protect himself, punched one of the Border Kings and for this he received a 5-minute penalty for head checking. A head checking penalty carries with it an automatic game misconduct from the existing game as well as a game ejection for the next game. The fact that a head checking penalty carries these liabilities is not the issue that upset the Dunlop team but the fact that no one could ever recall a play like this not being called roughing which carries a much more reasonable penalty assessment. In another scrum during the same stoppage, Ron Baker was given a 5-minute major for kneeing which carries a game misconduct as well as a two game suspension. It was not clear to this reporter just who it was that was involved with Baker in this event because it looked like any other scrum that happens during playoff games when everyone just ends up along the boards after a near miss in a scoring attempt.  The only obvious penalty was that to Mike Van Volsen who was accessed a major for slashing. For some strange reason these penalties are NOT on Pointstreak game sheet.
The Dunlop team fought valiantly throughout this disadvantage. Not only were they down on the ice to a 3 men against 5 for a full 5 minutes (during a major penalty a goal scored does not result in player returning to the ice until the whole penalty is served) but also knew that once they killed this they need to kill another 5 minute penalty that would start after these elapsed. The Dunnies were further depleted in available on ice players when first Jeremy Brown and then Chad Ford were assessed minor penalties that wouldn’t start until all the other penalties were over.
During all the time the Dunnies faced shorthanded in this situation the Border Kings managed one goal.  The Dunlops actually out shot the opposition by a 18-11 margin in the 2nd period.
After using up so much energy, first of all by trying to suppress the emotions and secondly by being out manned, the Whitby squad didn’t have much ‘gas in the tank’ in the final period. The Border Kings scored the only goal of the period to outscore the Dunnies by the identical score they had the last time they played.
The Dunlops will try to re-group, re-focus and re-charge for tonight’s match up against the host team, Brantford Blast.
The Dunlops will be without the services of two of their players from their top line as MacKellar sits his one game ban while line mate Ron Baker sits the first of two. This will give some of the Dunnies other players a chance to step up.

Dunlops look a Little Rusty Coming Out of the Gate

A little 'rust' in the hands and a bouncy puck created havok for the Dunnies all game long. Going 1 for 12 in powerplay opportunities did not aid the cause either.
The Dundas Real McCoys brought a different team to the Allan Cup than what the Dunnies saw in their Robertson Cup win. Their playoff scoring leader, Ryan Christie (10 GP- 19 pts), was back from injury and former NHLer Todd Harvey had played only 2 of the 4 Robertson Cup matches and he was in the line up. Dundas Real McCoys best move was to put Brett Leggat, the goalie picked up from Windsor Saints roster for the Allan Cup, in net and he really showed his best. He won MVP award for the McCoys while Jay McAuley, who was in on all the Dunlop goals, was named MVP for Whitby.
Rob DeCiantis, who scored at a goal a game pace netting 4 goals in the Robertson Cup series, continued his damage on the Dunnies by scoring the opening 2008 Allan Cup just 40 seconds in.
The Dunlops’ McAuley replied with their one and only powerplay goal of the game and then added an unassisted one that he scored while he was falling to the ice from being tied up. Peter MacKellar netted his first of two on the night before seeing Ryan Christie and Todd Harvey even up the score before the first period ended.
There was no scoring in the 2nd period.
The Real McCoys went ahead on a disputed goal that was counted. It appeared as if after coming in on a deke that Whitby goalie Chad Ford had stopped, Dundas player Brandon Merli had used a kicking motion to direct the puck into the net late in the game.
This set up some heroics from the likes of the ‘Killer MMMs’. MacKellar, McAuley and McCosh worked the puck around beautifully while Whitby goalie, Chad Ford, was pulled for a 6th attacker. The play ended with a tying goal being scored by MacKellar with 1:14 left in regulation time.
Nothing was settled in the 5-minute sudden victory overtime period so the first game of the 2008 Allan Cup ended in a draw.

TSN.ca Interviews Coach Posavad and Captain MacKellar

“I’m Pete MacKellar of the Whitby Dunlops and we are about to play for a trophy that is older than Gino Reda” was the lead into the story aired on TSN Friday April 4th, 2008 about the 100th Allan Cup Championship to be played in Brantford the week of April 14, 2008.

Gino Reda opened the clip by saying “The chance to play for the oldest amateur trophy in hockey is a blessing for those that never got a chance to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup”

“For most people, in their lives they hope to play in some kind of championship and to make it the Canadian championship makes it extra special” replied Whitby Dunlop coach Mike Posavad.

Reda continued “In recent years no team has endured more hardship than the Whitby Dunlops. Whitby has lost in the finals two years in a row, last year by just one goal”

“That was probably the worst loss I think that I’ve had in my life. I've won some championships and I've lost some but we were really in this game (speaking of last year’s Allan Cup Final) and we really felt we had a really good chance of winning….to walk out of there….I mean…it was killer!”  Whitby team captain Peter MacKellar answered.

When Gino spoke about playing in Brantford, MacKellar’s comment was “We’ll have a lot more fans than we had in Alberta or B.C. the year before so we’ll have a good crowd there as well as the other two Ontario teams I’m sure”

Mike Posavad, who hails from Brantford had this to say “We’ve been there (to the Allan Cup) the last two years which makes it even more painful not winning and to win it in my hometown would make it very special”

Road to Allan Cup winding down
by Mark Sakalauskas

It has been a long, eventful and demanding drive toward their destination, but this weekend it all comes to a screeching halt, one way or another for the Dundas Real McCoys. The destination, the City of Brantford and the 100th Allan Cup Championship. That’s been the focus for this hockey team since day one of the season and after falling in a forgettable Robertson Cup series sweep at the hands of the Whitby Dunlops, the McCoys’ are getting something that rarely exists in sports, a second chance. On Friday, when the McCoys lace up the skates for Game One in the best of three Renwick Cup at Grightmire Arena, they will make sure their final opportunity to reach the promise land doesn’t slip away. Standing in the way of Dundas are the Thunder Bay Hawks, the Northern Ontario representative in this spiralling staircase of a playoff system. The Hawks earned their way to Dundas, the site for all three games in the championship sprint, by ousting the Kenora Thistles in two straight games back in early March. The city of Thunder Bay is no stranger to Allan Cup successes, capturing six national titles in the 99-year history of the prized Canadian championship, including a victory in 2005, when they were known as the Bombers. This Thunder Bay squad is loaded with experience, bringing back eight players from that ’05 Allan Cup title.

“These guys have a lot of players returning from their Championship team three years ago,” said Real McCoys General Manager/Associate Head Coach Don Robertson. “So there’s no doubt they will be tough. That said, we’ll be better prepared this weekend and we’re hopeful for good crowds like we’ve seen all playoffs.”

For the McCoys, they need to put the disappointment of the Whitby series behind them in a hurry. They are fortunate enough, with the absence of a representative from Eastern Canada playing in this year’s Allan Cup, the Major League Hockey Champion was awarded the chance to play for the Renwick Cup, even with the loss in the Robertson Cup. Not only that, but the Real McCoys are on home ice for all three games(Friday, Saturday and Sunday, if necessary), if the series goes the distance. And until the two losses to the Dunlops, the McCoys’ home ice success has been well publicized all season long. The McCoys’ are a wounded team, unable to escape the last series without some injury woes, but their depth, talent and resilience will all be on the line once again as they creep closer to joining the host team, Brantford Blast and the Robertson Cup champion Whitby Dunlops, at the grandest stage in Canadian Senior Hockey, the 100th Allan Cup Championship. Buckle up everyone, the ride is about to come to a stop, with all signs hopefully leading toward the city of Brantford.

Allan Cup...Here we come !!
Dunnies will face either Dundas or Thunderbay in game 1 of Allan Cup

Don Robertson, Real McCoys GM & Coach, said that "Winning game 4 of the best of 7 series is the most difficult" and that proved to be true as Whitby had all they could handle as they won in overtime over a determined Dundas squad. Steve Birch fired a quick snap shot that was in and out of the top left corner of the net before Scott Dickie, Real McCoys goalie, even saw it to open the scoring just over two minutes in and then Colin Baker put the Dunnies up 2-0 at 3:22 and it appeared that this was going to be a "cake walk". Someone forgot to tell the Real McCoys this apparently because they kept ruining the party. Real McCoys forwards, #19 Mark Jooris (4A), #8 Rob DeCiantis (2G 1A) and #12 Justin Davis (1G 2A) were all over the ice all night long and in particular in the last minute of regulation time when, with 23 seconds remaining, Dundas tied the score and forced overtime on a shot from Davis that went over Chad Ford's shoulder into the top right corner of the net.

On Wednesday night a disappointed Kyle Musselman couldn’t physically make it to Dundas for game three of the series because he got caught up north in a snow storm but he made up for it on this night. He scored a powerplay goal in the 1st period and a shorthanded goal on a steal from a Real McCoy defenseman, each of these gave the Dunnies a two goal lead, only to see a pesky Dundas team net two powerplay goals in the last 6 minutes of regulation to force a sudden win overtime period. This setup the stage for Musselman’s hat trick “goal of the year’” as he again out-muscled (pardon the pun) a Dundas defender, who was getting a penalty call on the play, and then slid the puck under Real McCoys goalie, Scott Dickie, for the overtime Robertson Cup winning goal. During the season Musselman has showed speed and determination but none was more apparent than the performance on this, game and series winning goal, by this 1st year Dunnie. Welcome aboard Kyle.

Dunlops Musselman nets his 3rd of game for winner in OT!

Game Summary

Dunnies take Stranglehold

The Real McCoys, with their backs to the wall, came out hitting. They got on the scoreboard first on a rather innocent looking shot from the corner that found its way into the Dunnies net off Chad Ford's pad. Paul Lawson got credited with the goal. Soon after, at 4:09 of the first period Mike Amodeo charged Chad Ford in the Dunlop end as Ford was retrieving a shoot in and Amodeo was assessed a 5 minute major and game ejection. Ford, who was shaken up on the play, lay on the ice for over 5 minutes while he was attended to by the Whitby training staff. Chris Hardill came in to replace the downed Whitby goalie. The Dunlops tried making Ford feel better as they scored a powerplay goal on the opportunity. It was Jason McAuley from Ron Baker and Bob McQuat that got the goal that knotted the score at 1-1. Ford came back into the net at 10:36 and played until the end of the 2nd period. The visiting Dunnies went ahead on a quick wrist shot off the stick of Ryan Toms on a nice setup from Justin Cardwell. Dundas got a powerplay goal at 16:22 of the 1st frame to tie the game 2-2. Another Real McCoys' player, #25 Scott Young, was sent to showers early for checking Bob McQuat from behind. The Real McCoys who were already short players due to suspension or injury were now down two more men with the ejection of first, Mike Amodeo and now Scott Young. Their leading scorer in this series, #4 Nick Smith, received a two game suspension on Sunday in Whitby for a head check on Marty Kearns. The Dunlops fired 22 shots while Dundas mustered 10.
Before the game had started I was talking with Whitby Dunlop President, Steve Cardwell, and the two coaches Mike Posavad and Jeff McCormick. The snow storm as well as unexpected player no-shows because of work or family committments had left the Dunnies a bit short on the bench. I asked the coaches what they had in mind. Coach Posavad deferred the question to his assistant coach, Jeff McCormick, who answered "When you're on the road with a short bench you want to score early and score often". Little did he or I or the others, for that matter, know that this is exactly what Captain Peter Mackellar, Justin Cardwell, Dale Junkin, Matt Armstrong and Ron Baker would do in the 2nd period which belonged to the Dunlops. A quick goal at 12 seconds from Peter MacKellar got the Dunnies in motion. A minute and a half later Justin Cardwell popped his first of two in the game. His second one was a howitzer wrist shot from 5 feet inside the blue line that Dundas goalie, Sean Hall, still hasn't seen. A rather depleted Real McCoys bench looked on as the Dunlops scoring machine put on a clinic. Five straight goals by Whitby before the Real McCoys netted a couple in a minute late in the period. Ron Baker, with his 4th goal and 12th point of the Robertson Cup series, rounded out the 2nd period scoring. The Dunlops had the edge in shots 20-8 and had 6 goals in the period for their effort.
Chris Hardill came in to play goal in the 3rd period and finished the game as Chad Ford was resting after the first period collision.  The Real McCoys seemed pretty tired by the time the third period came around and the Dunlops were content in just getting the game over as they dumped the puck into the Dundas zone throughout the frame. Mike Kennedy, one of the 4 ex-NHL players on the Dundas roster, netted the only goal of the period. Whitby skated off with their third straight win over Dundas in this year's Robertson Cup and now has a stranglehold on this best 4 of 7 series 3-0.
These teams face-off again Wednesday, March 26 in Whitby at Iroquois Park with game time scheduled for 8:00 PM.
A victory by Whitby will give them a berth in this years Allan Cup Showdown to be played in Brantford the week of April 14th. The loser of this series will play the Thunderbay Bombers in a best 2 of 3 series next week.
Game Summary

Dunlops come to Play!                                               Game 2 Pictures

The Whitby Dunlops came to play and play they did. Four goals in the opening period from four different players and some solid net minding by Chad Ford had the Dunnies in control. Peter MacKellar got the first goal at 1:28 and then Justin Cardwell popped one less than a minute later. There was some excitement around Ford’s crease when Mike Kennedy came in on a rush and ran into Ford. John Batten protected his goalie and the end result of the penalties was a 2 minute slashing penalty and 5 minute cross-checking penalty and a game misconduct to Kennedy, an aggressor and fighting major to Batten while Chad Ford was assessed a 2 minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Mike Van Volsen scored with just over 3 minutes to go in the period and McAuley rounded out the 1st period scoring in the dying seconds. Whitby held a slight edge in shots on goal at 12-10.
The game seemed to slow to a crawl in the second before Ron Baker put the hometown Dunnies up by five on a nice setup from MacKellar and McAuley. Mike Smith, Real McCoys leading scorer in this series, finally broke the goose egg with one of is own at the 13:00 minute mark. A little later he was ejected for a head check on Martin Kearns as Kearns was finishing his check. As the period wore down the Dunnies were buzzing the crease on a powerplay and Steve Birch, who is back from injury, rang one of the crossbar. A few other near misses sent the teams to the locker room with Whitby leading 5-1 in this, game 2 in the best of 7 series.
The 3rd period saw the Dunlops score 4 and the Real McCoys net 3. Two of Dundas goals were scored by Jooris in last couple of minutes after the game was out of reach. The Whitby Dunlops outshoot Dundas in the game 36-28.
These teams resume the series back in Dundas on Tuesday night with Whitby up in best of 7 series 2 games to zero. There is no radio coverage of this game. The next home game will be played on Wednesday March 26 at Iroquois Park with game time 8:00 PM.

UNBELIEVABLY EXCITING HOCKEY!!                     Game 1 Pictures
Everything a hockey fan would want and more!!

There were 16 goals scored, 5 powerplay tallies and exciting end to end action as the Champions of the West (MLH- Major League Hockey), Dundas Real McCoys, and the Champions of the East (EOSHL- Eastern Ontario Senior Hockey League) , Whitby Dunlops, squared off in game one in the best 4 of 7 series in Dundas at the J.L. Grightmire Memorial Arena for the coveted Robertson Cup. (History of Robertson Cup)

The Dunlops got on the board first as Ron Baker scored his first of two on the night. This one came on a powerplay on a nifty setup from Shane McCosh and Whitby goalie Chad Ford. who froze a few Real McCoy defenders with a perfect pass to spring McCosh who drew the Dundas defenseman towards him before dishing it to Baker.
(Please note: The Pointstreak goals are in the reverse order because they used the time left in the period rather than the time of the goal. Example: 1st goal scored at 4:21 and they used 15:39. In the 3rd period the last goal was scored at 19:52 and they used :08).

It took Dundas two minutes to reply to Whitby’s opening goal when Mike Lankshear fired one past Ford to tie it up just over 6 minutes into the game. Dundas went on the attack and quickly put 3 more past a “not so ready to play” Chad Ford to take a 4-1 lead. Former NHLer, Todd Harvey, was in on all 3 of these goals and it prompted a goal tending change to close out the period as Chris Hardill came in to play at 17:01 until the period ended. The Real McCoys were like a shark that smelled blood and went right after the Dunnies and took only 39 seconds to fire one past Hardill for what seemed like an insurmountable 5-1 lead by the 17:40 mark of the first period. In Chad Ford’s defense, his “not so ready to play” came as a result of getting caught in traffic and then being given wrong directions to the arena by a Dundas resident. The little bit of a rest at the end of the first period and the intermission were all Ford needed to re-focus and help the Dunlops overcome the deficit.  Bob McQuat scored on a powerplay before the period ended and setup from McCosh who earned five points in the game and was all over the ice on this night. Dundas led at that time 5-2.
The 2nd period saw 7 goals scored, a return of Chad Ford who played great in net for the Dunlops and the “never say die” attitude of the Whitby team as they clawed their way back into the contest on two special team goals. The first was netted by Jason McAuley (shorthanded) and the second by Ron Baker (his 2nd of the game) on a powerplay to get the Dunnies within one at 5-4. This prompted a change in goal for Dundas who sent in Scott Dickie to replace Sean Hall. The change seemed to put an offensive spark into Dundas who potted a couple of goals, one by Dino Felicetti and the other by Nick Smith, who had 4 points (2G 2A) and sent the hometown McCoys up by 3 again just past the midway point in the game. The pesky Dunnies just kept skating and shooting and managed a total of 24 shots at the Dundas net in the 2nd. Peter Mackellar scored his first of 2 in the frame sandwiched by a beauty from Justin Cardwell who had been set up perfectly by John Batten. Unbelievably the Dunnies had scrambled, skated and shot their way back to knot the game 7-7 at the end of two periods.
Dundas tried to get the go ahead goal but Ford shut the door and stopped all 12 shots that came his way in the period. The Dunnies got the break they were looking for at 9:54 when Jason McAuley flipped one past Dickie to give the visitors the lead they preserved. With a 6th attacker on the ice, the Real McCoys were buzzing around the crease but  a calm and cool, Bob McQuat  checked one of the Dundas players off the puck and sent a shot from his goal line into the empty cage to seal the victory with 8 seconds remaining.
The final shots read 48 for Whitby and 34 for Dundas. Whitby went 4 for 9 on the PP and Dundas was 1 for 6.
These two teams resume this very exciting series on Sunday afternoon with game time scheduled for 3:30 at Iroquois Park. There will NOT be radio for this game or for Tuesday's game either so get your tickets now.

Captain MacKellar Lights it up

A 5 point performance on 4 goals and 1 assist by Peter MacKellar led the Whitby Dunlops to their 3rd consecutive ReMax Upper Canada Cup. The ReMax trophy is given to the team that wins the EOSHL. The Dunnies await the MLH winner where Brantford Blast and Dundas Real McCoys are in a tug of war series that Dundas leads 3-2 in the best 4 of 7 western Ontario showdown.
The Dunlops won the finals in the EOSHL by defeating a tired out Simcoe County Tundra team in four games straight. The Tundra had fought back in their last series against Frankford coming from a 3-1 Frankford semi-final playoff lead to take the last 3 games of the series. They had only a few days rest before taking on Whitby who, in the previous two years, had gone to the final game of the Allan Cup before being eliminated.
Today’s game was played in Orillia and the visiting Dunlops took a two goal lead before the game was 5 minutes old only to see the pesky Tundra claw their way back with a couple of their own. Peter MacKellar had opened the scoring from Ron Baker who set up three on the night and then Pat Montgomery chipped one in. Less than a minute later John Vecchiarelli close the gap before Roy Munday tied it going into the first intermission. The Tundra had a late goal called back when with 3 seconds left in the first period a Tundra player had interfered with Whitby goalie Chad Ford prior to the puck entering the net.
In the middle frame the Dunnies stormed out and built up a 5-2 lead on goals by Ryan Toms and two by MacKellar only to once again witness a comeback by Simcoe County. The Tundra came within a goal of tieing the game before the period ended. Kevin Shoebridge, the EOSHL Regular Season scoring leader, and Scott Goheen eroded the Dunlop lead to 5-4.
The final frame saw the visitors pour it on and they kept peppering Tundra goalie, Ron Bertrand, with shots that in the end totaled 60 for the game. Bertrand stood tall and kept the game close until finally Jason McAuley tipped one past him with just over 5 minutes left in regulation time to give the Dunnies a two goal cushion. In the final few seconds MacKellar potted an empty net goal on a nice tip up ice from Joe Van Volsen to send the Whitby Dunlops into their next series versus the winner of Major League Hockey finals playoff between Brantford Blast and Dundas Real McCoys. Dundas leads this series 3-2 with the next game being played Sunday March 16th in Brantford.

Dunlops DO it UP Right!
50th anniversary of World Hockey Championship
well received in Whitby

Written by Brian McNair OSHAWA THIS WEEK
WHITBY -- The moist eyes gave it away: this meant a lot.

The 50th anniversary of the Whitby Dunlops' 1958 world hockey championship was

celebrated in style this past weekend, as 10 of the 13 surviving players joined team manager Wren Blair and hundreds of fans for a trip down memory lane.

When a new banner was raised commemorating the achievement Sunday at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre, exactly 50 years after the big win in Norway, more than a few eyes were welling up.

"This was a real tightly knit hockey club and the boys are still tightly knit," Bob Attersley explained afterward. "Those memories never go away. It's been such a great weekend to have them all back together again.
"After 50 years, it's been a long time, but the emotions are still there.....MORE

The BAKERS cook up a win
The Whitby Dunlops came out of the gate and took control of the play for most of the 1st period. They played a very controlled game and frustrated the Tundra with their checking. Joe Van Volsen got the Dunnies on the board on a nice pass from Justin Cardwell on a two on one that was set up by Jeremy Brown who had tipped the puck off the boards past a rushing Tundra player. Later in the period Whitby's leading scorer, Ron Baker, popped his first of two as the Dunnies big line of Baker, MacKellar and McAuley were all in on the goal. Chad Ford who had a mostly quiet period made a flurry of big saves late in the 1st, as the Tundra peppered 15 shots at the Whitby net minder. The visiting Dunlops were ahead 2-0 at the end of the period.
Ron Baker scored the only goal of the second period and Chad Ford was sharp in goal for the Dunnies stopping another 15 shots. The Dunlops had only two regular defenseman in the line up. Forwards took turns playing defense and chipped the puck out of danger throughout the period.
The 3rd period was a clinic on skating and shooting put on by #44 Colin Baker scoring a hat trick with 3 goals in ten minutes. His last goal came on an unassisted short handed breakaway from the Dunnies blue line. The Tundra put one past Ford early in the 3rd and rallied for two more late in the game once it was completely out of reach.
The Dunlops lead this best 4 of 7 series 3-0 with game 4 being played in Orillia at The Brian Orser Arena at 1:15 PM on Saturday March 15.
Game Summary

Great Celebration for 1958 Dunnies sparks win
Thanks to the 1958 World Champion Whitby Dunlops for traveling, some from great distances, and being part of the celebrations of winning the World Championships 50 years ago. March 9th, 1958 was when these amateur hockey players led by the architect, team manager Wren Blair, won the World Championship in Oslo, Norway. Today, 50 years later, they were honored in a beautiful pre-game celebration hosted by the Town of Whitby, The Whitby Sports Hall of Fame and the current Whitby Dunlops Hockey Club. Thanks also to Mark Hughes, Terry Johnson and Chris Dunlop from  CKDO for your continued support.
There were many boys and girls decked in their Whitby Minor Hockey jerseys in attendance from the Whitby Minor Hockey Association. Thanks to president, Bill Schlitt, for arranging this.
After the ceremonial puck drop by Harry Sinden and Whitby Mayor, Pat Perkins, the current Dunnies played the 2nd game of their best 4 of 7 series against the 2nd place finishers in the EOSHL, the Simcoe County Sunrise Toyota Tundra.
It didn’t take the visiting Tundra long to find the Dunlop net. Richard Kazda opened the scoring 1:15 into the opening period and it seemed to be the “smartening up pill” that the Dunlops needed as they took charge after that to score 5 unanswered goals before the hometown crowd. The Dunlops found their powerplay and cashed in on 3 of the 9 chances they had. Dunlop captain, Peter MacKellar, got the team rolling just over a minute and a half after Tundra’s opening goal for Whitby’s first powerplay goal and later in the game Bob McQuat, EOSHL Defenseman of the year, potted 2 more. Dale Junkin and speedster, Colin Baker, rounded out the Dunlop scoring.
John Vecchiarelli netted the only goal in the 3rd period for the Tundra but by that time the game was out of reach. Chad Ford who stopped 38 of the 40 shots he faced got the victory in goal for the Dunnies.
These teams resume the playoffs on Tuesday in Coldwater with game time set for 8:00 PM.

Game Summary

Harry Sinden and Charlie Burns Travel Far to Attend
New fans and fans from the era were there at the Tap N tankard Saturday afternoon despite the weather to get autographs and to meet these heroes.
One can understand why they were and are WINNERS when in their company for a short period of time. The genuine feeling of their magic touched us all as we listened to stories from the day and weeks of the memorable trip where boys became men.
Youngsters like Harry Sinden who captained the team, Bobby Attersley who spearheaded the attack and Frank Bonello who was a centre ice man and the others who played to get jobs were just hockey players when they left Canada to compete in the Championships in 1958.
Wren Blair was a young man with a great vision and a determination that was second to none. “He really held this thing together for us” was a comment made to me by Fred Etcher about Wren Blair. Little did they know that several very prominent NHL executives would emerge from this amateur team.
Harry Sinden would become president of the Boston Bruins. Wren Blair would become General Manager of the Minnesota North Stars. Frank Bonello would lead the Toronto Marlies to success and then become a key part of NHL Central Scouting.  Charlie Burns would go on to play in the NHL and be in the NHL record books forever as being the last NHL playing coach.
Listening to Harry Sinden speak about the losses that Canada had suffered on the World Hockey stage in the 1950’s and the pressure that they put upon themselves to restore Canada as a hockey power showed the stuff that these men are made of. “I was proud to win it all for Canada and Whitby then and I feel the pride tonight” he said in a stirring speech at a dinner held in Whitby on Saturday March 8, 2008 to commemorate their accomplishments. It is difficult to describe the feeling but a sensation of electricity went right through my body too when he said that.

WE are PROUD of you and all your team mates too Mr Sinden!!
Thanks to all the members of this Championship Team who traveled far to get here and also for those who were able to attend.

Power Play Sputters but Whitby Still Wins
Colin Baker Scores Tying Goal at 12:27 of 2nd period on an unassisted shorthanded rush
The Dunlops opened the EOSHL Finals with a come from behind victory over the leagues 2nd place finishers, Simcoe County Tundra, in Whitby. Great goaltending by Tundra net minder Dave Digironimo (who played for Dundas Real McCoys when the Dunlops met them in the 2005-2006 EOSHL vs MLH playoffs) kept the visitors in the game until an empty net goal by the Dunnies salted away the victory.
The EOSHL league leading powerplay of the Dunlops who had 9 chances on the night finally cashed in for their only PP goal at 5:16 of the 3rd period when Pat Montgomery scored what eventually was the game winning goal after an exciting rush by the game’s 1st star, Colin Baker, and line mate Kyle Musselman who was his pesky best all night. Simcoe County netted 3 on the 7 chances they had with the man advantage.
Specialty teams have been the best in the EOSHL for Whitby during the regular season and it is usually the power play that clicks but this night a beautiful unassisted rush by Colin Baker, who had tipped the puck past the Tundra defenseman who was rushing through the centre ice area, finished the play with a deke that fooled Tundra net minder Digironimo as Baker coolly deposited the puck into the net for the tying goal.
Tundra’s ever dangerous #19, Kevin Shoebridge (EOSHL scoring champion), set up all three of Simcoe County’s powerplay markers. Shoebridge topped all EOSHL players for points during the 2007-2008 regular netting 38 goals and assisting on 47 for a total of 85 points in 27 games played.
These two teams resume the playoff finals with the next game in Coldwater on Saturday evening before returning to Whitby for a Sunday afternoon 1 PM game to be played at Iroquois Park.
Sunday’s 1 PM game will commence with a celebration prior to the opening face off for the players of the 1958 World Champion Whitby Dunlop team who will be in attendance.
Harry Sinden, Bobby Attersley, Wren Blair, Frank Bonello are some of the expected attendees with a total of 11 former members or surviving spouses taking part in the ceremony. More Pictures

Justin Cardwell strong in Series Victory
The Dunlops advance to the EOSHL Finals with a 4-1 series victory over the pesky Norwood Vipers. The Dunnies finally solved Viper’s net minder, Kevin Rainey, to salt away a 7-2 win.
The game was closer than the score indicated. Both teams made a lot of mental errors and both teams showed some fatigue after playing 5 games in 7 nights.
The Vipers continued scoring short handed as EOSHL MVP Darren Doherty swooped in unassisted to score his 2nd short handed goal of the series and put Norwood ahead early as the Dunlops were killing a penalty. Jeremy Brown, with his 1st Dunnies goal, tied it for the home team and both teams went to the first intermission tied at 1-1.
Justin Cardwell, who had setup Jeremy Brown’s first period goal, scored at the 2:31 mark of the 2nd period to give the Dunlops a short lived lead. Doherty with his 2nd of the night 6th of the series tied and it up for the visitors. At the 16:32 mark of the middle frame, Jason McAuley, who leads Whitby in playoff points, scored his 4th goal of the series for what proved to be the eventual winner.
The 3rd period belonged to the Dunlops as they took control of the play and scoreboard. Four unanswered goals eventually toppled the Vipers who played hard to try and avoid elimination from further play.
Chad Ford, who performed so well on Tuesday night in Norwood returned to earn the win and help the team move on to the finals where the Dunlops will face either the Frankfort Huskies or the Simcoe County Canucks.
Game dates and times will be displayed as soon as opponent is determined.
The Dunnies will play one of their EOSHL Final games at Iroquois Park on Sunday March 9th, 2008 at 1:00 PM. Prior to the opening face off The Town of Whitby, The Whitby Sports Hall of Fame and The Whitby Dunlops will honor the players from the 1958 World Championship. Tickets are available at the box office.

Chad Ford Steals the Show for Whitby
Whitby goaltender, Chad Ford, stopped 62 of the 64 shots he faced and helped lead the Dunlops to a 3-1 series lead over the Norwood Vipers. The Dunlops, after suffering the worst defeat of the year at the hands of the Vipers in their playoff game played in Norwood on Sunday night, came out gunning and it only took Ron Baker 33 seconds to put the Dunnies in front. Darren Doherty, Norwood’s leading scorer and EOSHL MVP, got the Vipers even less than 90 seconds later on a power play. The Dunlops poured it on for their best period of the night and directed 27 shots at the Vipers en route to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. Ron Baker got his 2nd of the night and Peter MacKellar also scored for the visitors.
The 2nd period was scoreless but it was the Vipers turn to pull out all the stops in search of a victory which would have tied the series but outstanding net minding by Chad Ford kept them off the score sheet even though they out shot the Dunlops 28-13.
The 3rd period also saw Norwood take control again as they doubled the Whitby shots 28-14 but some unbelievable Ford saves held the Vipers to just 1 goal in the period. The game was really a see-saw battle and it took until 12:36 of the 3rd period before Whitby had a bit of breathing room when Joe Van Volsen launched a shot that went over a prone Kevin Rainey in Norwood’s net to put the visitors up by 3.
Norwood pulled their goalie with just under 6 minutes left to go in the game in order to see if they could get one past the spectacular goaltending exhibition of Chad Ford. During this stretch the Dunnies had 3 different opportunities to ice the game by scoring while Norwood’s goalie was on the bench but each rush ended without the puck going into the open Viper net. Corey Bricknell who played the last several years with the Dunlops finally solved Ford, to get what proved to be Norwood's last goal of the game, but Bob McQuat’s empty net goal in the final minute gave the Whitby Dunlops the victory and a 3-1 series lead in the EOSHL quarter finals.
The next game in this series will be played in Whitby at Iroquois Park on Thursday February 28 at 8:00 PM.

EOSHL M.V.P. shows his stuff in Norwood victory
Darren Doherty (Vipers Leading Scorer 29G 33A in 28games played), who was presented the EOSHL M.V.P. Award by Larry Hicks (commissioner of the EOSHL) before the start of tonight’s playoff game, showed why he was selected the leagues MVP with a 3 goal 2 assist night on the score sheet. Doherty had opened the scoring only to see the visiting Dunlops on goals by Ron Baker and Jason McAuley end the first period ahead of the Vipers by a 2-1 score.
Jake Taylor had tied the contest early in the 2nd period but McAuley restored Whitby’s 1 goal lead before the midway point of the game.
The Dunlops had some players missing because of injury, suspension or work commitments and it started to show as the game wore on. Players playing with different line mates or in different positions had them on their heels at times and Norwood cashed in on many of the opportunities they were presented with. Adrian Wilson who scored 5 goals in 27 games in the regular season had 2 on the power play both being setup by MVP Doherty but Doherty’s work wasn’t finished yet. He put the Vipers ahead for good at the 14:40 mark of the 2nd period but he broke Whitby’s back with an end to end shorthanded goal, which eventually was the game winning goal, while the Dunlops were enjoying a 2 man advantage. The Dunnies seemed to unravel after that goal and Norwood pounced on the opportunity and put 3 more unanswered goals into the Whitby net.
Whitby outshot Norwood 52-32 but hot goaltending by Kevin Rainey in the Norwood net kept the Dunnies from coming back or closing the gap.
The next game in this series will be played in Norwood on Tuesday February 26 at 7:30 PM. The game will be broadcast on CKDO radio (107.7 FM or 1580 AM).
Game tickets for Whitby’s next home game are available at the box office.

Pat Montgomery nets a pair in Dunlop victory
Pat Montgomery led the Dunnies with 3 points, 2 were from goals as he popped the first and last goal of the game. The Dunlop attack was fairly well balanced and the hometown team seemed to have a lot of jump as they cruised to a 4-0 first period lead. The scoring came from 6 different players and all were scored while playing 5 on 5 hockey.
Chad Ford who also played in game 1 of this series left the game midway through the 3rd period in what appeared to be an upper body injury. Chris Hardill came in to replace Ford and looked sharp stopping all 14 shots he faced in the final 11 minutes in the game.
Kyle Mussleman, who scored a short handed goal in game 1, scored at the 10:37 mark of the first period and then took on Brad Gibbs in a ‘toe-to-toe’ bout that Musselman won easily early in the 3rd period to finish the night.
Bob McQuat, who was named EOSHL Defenseman of the Year 2007-08 earlier this month, setup a couple of dandy goals and was very sound defensively for the Dunlops all night earning him 1st star honors.
These two teams face each other again Sunday night and Tuesday night in Norwood and would come back to play game 5 in this best 4 of 7 series in Whitby on Thursday night at 8:00 PM if necessary.
In the other EOSHL semi-final between Frankford and Simcoe County the series is tied at 1-1. Simcoe County after losing large in game 1 came back home to beat the Huskies in overtime 7-6 to even the series. This series resumes Sunday night in Simcoe County.

Fight Night in Whitby in 1st game of semi-finals
Rough and tumble hockey was the order sent by Norwood in the first game of the semi-final best 4 of 7 series against Whitby. Plenty of roughing, stick penalties and a match penalty to #10 David Herring for abuse of officials by the Vipers cost them dearly on the scoreboard as they found themselves scored on 3 times while the Dunlops held a man advantage.
As David Herring, whose match penalty carries automatic game suspensions and EOSHL review, was serving a completely unnecessary abuse of officials penalty the hometown Dunnies scored twice in 47 seconds and then got another for good measure one minute and seven seconds later to take a 3-0 lead into the dressing room after the first period.
In the 2nd period Norwood continued their parade to the penalty box and watched as Peter MacKellar scored his 2nd goal of the game and 3rd powerplay goal for the Dunlops to vault them into an insurmountable 4 goal lead halfway through the contest. John Ross on a good hustle type of play by him that was setup by Matt Armstrong’s going to the net rounded out the 2nd period scoring in the period’s last few seconds.
The final frame saw the Dunnies down 2 men but the Vipers couldn’t put anything past Chad Ford who earned 1st star recognition for his performance. After Ford was assessed a double minor and the Vipers enjoying a powerplay it was Kyle Musselman that spoiled their fun by scoring a shorthanded marker that put the Dunnies ahead 6-0. Nick Lees on a beautifully executed solo rush finally got one past Ford for the Vipers only goal.
With less than 8 minutes left in the game a fight broke out between EOSHL Defenseman of the year, Bob McQuat, and #16 Adrian Wilson. It was clearly won by McQuat. Shortly after play resumed two other combatants, Kearns from Whitby and Taylor from Norwood, went at it.
The next game in this series will be played at Iroquois Park on Saturday night at 6:30 PM. Tickets are available at the box office prior to game or on game night you can purchase them from one of our ticket sellers at the door.
