Definition of All-Star: One who excels in a position versus the performance of any other individual in that position. A person is measured against his or her peers in that position.
The Major League Hockey held its All-Star voting this week with the results being posted on the league web-site. The Whitby Dunlop’s will not participate in the messaging of the final results nor will we except any awards given.
Why!!! In a few short words; the voting was not done in the spirit of the definition of All-Star. This is not Steve Cardwell whining because he doesn’t like or respect the outcome of the voting. It is about the personal biases and voting decisions from my peers in the 3 other towns or cities. in the league.
#8 Peter MacKellar
The only example I am going to give you (and there are more) is Peter MacKellar.
Peter plays right wing and has for 6 years been 1 of the premier players in senior hockey. He plays every game home and away. He led the league in goals with 26 and was second in total points
Voting Results …No All-Star selection (team 1 or team 2), instead my peers vote for players with way less goals, players who don’t go on the road and players with far less points. Why??? Because there is a fundamental flaw in the process. Personal Bias, ones own agenda and personal dislike for a person or organization.. We, the league voters, couldn’t rise above the temptation. We couldn’t let the definition rule. We had to do it our way.
Our organization will not be involved in any All-Star activities or awards until the people running senior hockey hold themselves to a higher standard.. We want to win as much as any team in Canada and will continue to strive for team success. Along the way I personally hope all players, coaches, managers and team staff that deserve an award will be judged based on the definition.
Regards,
Steve Cardwell President Whitby Dunlops
